What is MP3?
MP3 is the name given to that technology that can reduce the size of audio data to many fold less size. No wonder, MP3 is the world second largest keyword after sex, searched in major search engines even today. It has revolutionized the music industry by compressing the size of digital files used by trillions of music lovers all around the world creating a digital revolution.
MP3 stands for Moving Picture Expert Group - Layer III or MPEG-III. MPEG is the name given to a group of different protocols regarding media and the layer III, associated with MP3 is the audio subset of MPEG group dealing with the compression of audio data to reduce the size of the data without affecting the quality of sound.
MP3 technology is a compression technology that can reduce the size of electronic audio file by many folds. It's very similar to the process of zipping normal windows files for reducing its size by compression, but unlike zip that does not lead to data loss, MP3 is a "lossy" compression. Little data get lost in the process of compression which slightly affects the quality of audio but this change is very less and can be neglected keeping in the mind the many fold size reduction offered by it.
MP3 compression is a lossy compression mechanism which means that every time , when a sound file is converted from its original format to MP3 format, the audio quality gets affected due to the loss of data. The loss is usually very small and cannot be distinguished by human ears but lead to many fold reduction in the size of the audio file.
